He finished his graduate studies (PhD) in Demography and Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania (2001). Professor Stewart completed his undergraduate coursework (BS) in Interdisciplinary Studies at Norfolk State University (1996). His current work includes using storytelling and computational models to shed light on the system of racial inequality, examining the role of disease prevalence in mortality outcomes, and investigating informal research networks in social science. He has published on mathematical methods for studying inequality and estimating mortality, as well as on racial and ethnic disparities in socioeconomic status, health, and mortality.
